Jungfraujoch, Interlaken, Switzerland, Europe
Jungfraujoch, branded as the "Top of Europe," is a high-altitude col and major tourist destination in the Bernese Alps. It is located at an elevation of 3,454 meters above sea level.
Visual Characteristics
The site is dominated by the surrounding peaks of the Eiger (3,967 m), Mönch (4,110 m), and Jungfrau (4,158 m). The dominant feature is the Aletsch Glacier, the longest glacier in the Alps, which begins at the southern base of the col. Architecturally, the station is largely subterranean, tunneled into the rock of the Sphinx ridge, topped by the metallic, domed Sphinx Observatory.

Historical & Engineering Origin
Conceived by Adolf Guyer-Zeller, construction began in 1896 and was completed in 1912. The project was an extraordinary feat of manual labor and explosives, with the final station carved into the mountain. The Sphinx Observatory was added in 1937 for glaciology and astronomy research.
