The Rugenbrücke is a vehicular and pedestrian bridge spanning the A8 motorway in the Rugen area of Matten bei Interlaken. It serves as a primary connection between the residential districts of Matten and the recreational forest area of Kleiner Rugen.

The bridge is a modern reinforced concrete structure with a slight arch profile. It features wide pedestrian sidewalks on both sides, separated from the roadway by steel safety barriers. The railings consist of vertical metal balusters topped with a broad handrail. The underside of the bridge is finished in smooth grey concrete, designed to accommodate the heavy traffic flow of the A8 motorway below.

The bridge is located at the intersection of Rugenstrasse and the A8 motorway (Exit 25). It is 1.5km south of the Interlaken West Railway Station. Access is available via the 101 or 104 bus lines, stopping at "Matten, Hotel Sonne," followed by a 400m walk. Private vehicles can access the bridge via Rugenstrasse; public parking is available at the nearby base of the Kleiner Rugen hill.

The bridge was constructed as part of the Swiss national motorway expansion to bypass Interlaken’s town center, facilitating transit through the Bernese Oberland. It replaced older local road crossings to accommodate the high-speed transit of the A8. Geologically, the bridge is anchored in the alluvial plain between Lake Thun and Lake Brienz, near the base of the limestone-heavy Rugen hill.

The best time for photography of the Jungfrau massif from the bridge is the late morning when the sun is positioned to the southeast. Traffic noise is constant due to the motorway below, making early morning visits (before 07:00) the quietest for pedestrians.

Facts & Legends

The bridge is located near the site of the Unspunnenfest, a traditional festival held every twelve years involving the "Unspunnen Stone" throw. A local tip: the bridge is the most direct pedestrian route to the Rugenbräu Brewery, which has operated at the base of the hill since 1866.
