Thun Castle (Schloss Thun) is a medieval fortress located in the city of Thun, approximately 30 km west of Interlaken.

The castle is defined by its massive 12th-century tower (Donjon) topped by four distinctive corner turrets. Its white-washed walls and red-tiled roofs dominate the city's skyline. The structure sits on the Schlossberg, a sandstone ridge overlooking the Aare river and the historic Old Town.

Pedestrian: From Thun station, it is a 10-minute walk through the Old Town, involving several flights of stairs (Schlossbergtreppe) or a lift from the Rathausplatz.

Historical Origin

Built between 1180 and 1190 by Duke Berthold V of Zähringen, the castle was designed primarily as a symbol of power rather than a purely defensive residence. In 1218, it passed to the Counts of Kyburg, who added the upper levels. Since 1384, it has been under Bernese administration, serving variously as a seat of government, a prison, and a regional court.
