Thun Castle, Interlaken, Switzerland, Europe

Thun Castle (Schloss Thun) is a medieval fortress located in the city of Thun, approximately 30 km west of Interlaken.

Visual Characteristics

The castle is defined by its massive 12th-century tower (Donjon) topped by four distinctive corner turrets. Its white-washed walls and red-tiled roofs dominate the city's skyline. The structure sits on the Schlossberg, a sandstone ridge overlooking the Aare river and the historic Old Town.

Address: Schlossberg 1, 3600 Thun.

Transit from Interlaken: * Rail: 30 minutes via direct InterCity (IC) or regional (R) trains from Interlaken West or Ost to Thun station.

Historical Origin

Built between 1180 and 1190 by Duke Berthold V of Zähringen, the castle was designed primarily as a symbol of power rather than a purely defensive residence. In 1218, it passed to the Counts of Kyburg, who added the upper levels. Since 1384, it has been under Bernese administration, serving variously as a seat of government, a prison, and a regional court.

Key Highlights & Activities

Historical Museum: Spans five floors of the tower, documenting 4,000 years of regional history, including archaeological finds and medieval weaponry.

Corner Turrets: Visitors can climb into the four towers for panoramic views of Lake Thun, the Stockhorn range, and the Bernese Alps.

Court Prison: A 19th-century addition to the castle grounds that is now part of the exhibition space.

Infrastructure & Amenities
