Kacic Square, Makarska, Croatia, Europe
Kačić Square (Trg fra Andrije Kačića Miošića) is the central urban plaza and primary social hub of Makarska, located at the heart of the Old Town.
Visual Characteristics
The square is a rectangular, paved open space enclosed by historic stone buildings and the Church of St. Mark. Its center is dominated by a bronze monument to the monk and poet Andrija Kačić Miošić. The flooring consists of light-colored stone slabs, which open up toward the harbor on the southern side. The northern end is elevated by stone steps leading to the church portal.
Location & Access Logistics
The square is located at the intersection of the town’s harbor promenade (Riva) and the historic pedestrian grid.
Access: Entirely pedestrianized. It serves as the main gateway to the Old Town's narrow side streets (kalas).
Public Transport: The central bus station is 0.4km north.
Parking: No vehicle access. The nearest paid parking is at the "Osejava" lot (0.3km South) or the waterfront parking zones.
Historical Origin
The square took its current form in the late 18th and early 19th centuries as Makarska expanded following the retreat of Ottoman forces. It was named after Andrija Kačić Miošić, a Franciscan monk whose 1756 work Razgovor ugodni naroda slovinskoga was a cornerstone of local literacy. The central monument was created by Ivan Rendić and inaugurated in 1890.
Key Highlights & Activities
Kačić Monument: A 19th-century bronze statue commemorating the local hero and writer.
Mletačka Česma (Venetian Fountain): A historic public fountain located on the square, still providing drinking water.
Events: The square is the primary venue for the Makarska Cultural Summer, hosting open-air concerts, folklore festivals, and public screenings.
Social Hub: The perimeter is lined with outdoor cafe seating, serving as the city’s "living room."
Infrastructure & Amenities
The square is surrounded by essential services, including banks, currency exchanges, and retail shops. Public restrooms are located 150 meters away near the town market. 5G cellular coverage is excellent. The stone surface is level and accessible, though the steps leading to the church require manual navigation or use of side ramps where available.
Best Time to Visit
Daily Life: Late afternoon (18:00–20:00) is the peak time for local social activity and "people watching."
Photography: Early morning provides the best direct light on the church facade and monument before the square falls into the deep shadow of the Biokovo mountains in the late afternoon.
Season: December features the town’s Christmas market, while summer months offer nightly live performances.
Facts & Legends
A historical oddity is the "paved memory" of the 1962 earthquake; the square underwent significant stabilization and renovation to repair the shifts in the limestone subsoil. Local tradition holds that rubbing the toe of the Kačić monument brings good luck to travelers, a practice evidenced by the polished bronze on the statue’s foot.
