Jal Mahal is a palace located in the Man Sagar Lake in Jaipur, India.

Visual Characteristics

The palace is a five-story structure constructed from red sandstone. Four of its stories are submerged below the water level, with only the top story visible. The visible level features a traditional Rajput architectural style with arched windows, chhatris (domes), and intricate carvings. The exterior walls are painted in shades of ochre and red.

The original structure of Jal Mahal is believed to have been built in 1796 by Maharaja Sawai Pratap Singh. It was later renovated and expanded by Maharaja Jai Singh II in the 18th century. The palace was initially designed as a pleasure palace and a duck hunting lodge for the royal family. The Man Sagar Lake is an artificial lake, created by the construction of an embankment across the Darbha Nadi river.
