Lake Faak, Villach, Austria, Europe
Lake Faak (Faaker See) is a freshwater alpine lake located in the district of Villach-Land, approximately 7km southeast of the Villach city center. It is the fifth-largest lake in the Carinthia region, situated at an elevation of 554 meters above sea level.
Visual Characteristics
The lake is known for its distinct turquoise water color, caused by high concentrations of suspended limestone (glacial flour) from the nearby Karawanks. The shoreline is predominantly low-lying with dense reed beds, while the central area features a 12-hectare wooded island. The southern horizon is dominated by the jagged limestone peak of the Mittagskogel (2,145m).
Location & Access Logistics
Access from Villach is via the B84 (Faaker See Straße) or the B85 (Rosental Straße). The lake is served by the ÖBB S2 railway line, with stops at "Faak am See" and "Ledenitzen." A public circulator bus (Line 5194) connects the various lakeside villages including Faak, Drobollach, and Egg. Parking is available at public lidos (Strandbäder) and designated lots in Drobollach and Faak.
Historical & Ecological Origin
The lake basin was formed by the Drau Glacier during the last ice age (Würm glaciation). It is a dimictic lake with a maximum depth of 29.5 meters. Historically, the area was settled by Slavic tribes, and the lake remains a central ecological habitat for native species such as pike, zander, and various species of waterfowl sheltered by the reed belts.
Key Highlights & Activities
Electric motorboats and pedal boats are available for rent, as combustion engines are prohibited on the lake. The "Everglades" section in the reeds provides a navigable channel for kayaks and canoes. An 8km flat hiking and cycling trail circles the entire perimeter. The lake is a focal point for the annual European Bike Week, the largest motorcycle rally in Europe.
Infrastructure & Amenities
Public lidos offer changing rooms, restrooms, and managed swimming areas. Most beaches feature lawn areas with mature trees providing shade. High-speed 5G cellular coverage is available around the entire shoreline. Food vendors, grocery stores, and campsites are concentrated in the villages of Faak and Drobollach.
Best Time to Visit
Water temperatures reach peak suitability for swimming (up to 27°C) in July and August. Photography is most effective at sunrise from the northern shore (Drobollach) to capture the Mittagskogel reflecting in the turquoise water. Early September is high-occupancy due to the European Bike Week event.
Facts & Legends
The lake is one of the few in the region with a large habitable island that features a hotel accessible only by boat. A local geological oddity is the "Faaker See-Zufluss," where the main inflow comes from groundwater and small streams, contributing to the exceptionally high water turnover rate and clarity.
