Lake Ossiach (Ossiacher See) is the third-largest lake in the state of Carinthia, located northeast of Villach. It serves as a major recreational area and is known for its high water quality and cultural landmarks.

The lake is characterized by its elongated shape and emerald-green water. It is framed by the Gerlitzen Alpe to the north and the forested ridges of the Ossiach Tauern to the south. The shoreline features a mix of reed belts, public lidos, and historical architecture, most notably the towering spire of Ossiach Abbey.

The lake is situated roughly 5 km from Villach city center.

Rail: The Ossiacher See Schifffahrt (ferries) and the S2 S-Bahn line serve the northern shore (stations include Annenheim and Sattendorf).

Vehicle: Primary access via the B94 (Ossiacher Bundesstraße).

Cycling: A 27-km paved cycling path (R2) completely encircles the lake.

Transit: The Gerlitzen Kanzelbahn cable car departs from Annenheim, providing an aerial view of the entire basin.

Historical & Ecological Origin

The lake basin was formed by the Drau Glacier during the last ice age. It is a dimictic lake, meaning its waters mix twice a year, contributing to its status as a drinking-water-quality reservoir. Historically, the area was dominated by Ossiach Abbey, a Benedictine monastery founded around 1028, which served as the cultural and spiritual center of the region for centuries.

A historical legend claims that the Polish King Bolesław II lived as a mute penitent monk at Ossiach Abbey until his death to atone for the murder of Bishop Stanislaus. A technical fact: Lake Ossiach is one of the few lakes in the region that does not have a single large city on its shores, preserving a more natural and decentralized atmosphere compared to Lake Wörthersee.
