Lake Tingréla is a freshwater lake situated near Banfora in the Cascades Region of Burkina Faso.

Visual Characteristics

The lake is characterized by its dark, tannin-stained waters, a result of decaying vegetation. Its perimeter is fringed with dense tropical vegetation, including various tree species and reeds. The water surface can appear smooth or slightly rippled depending on wind conditions.

Location & Access Logistics

Lake Tingréla is located approximately 10 kilometers southwest of Banfora. Access is via the paved Route Nationale 1 (RN1) towards Bobo-Dioulasso, then turning south onto a dirt track signposted for the lake. The dirt track is approximately 3 kilometers long and is generally passable for 2WD vehicles during the dry season. During the wet season, a 4WD vehicle is recommended. Parking is available at designated points near the lake shore. There are no direct public transport routes to the lake; visitors typically arrange private transport from Banfora.

Historical & Ecological Origin

Lake Tingréla is a natural lake formed within a depression in the landscape. Its ecological significance lies in its role as a habitat for various bird species and its contribution to the local hydrology. The dark color of the water is due to the high concentration of humic acids released from decomposing organic matter in the surrounding wetlands.

Key Highlights & Activities

Boat tours on the lake are available, offering opportunities for birdwatching. Visitors can observe hippopotamuses in their natural habitat from a safe distance. Photography of the flora and fauna is a common activity.

Infrastructure & Amenities

Basic amenities are limited. There are no permanent restroom facilities or designated shade structures. Food vendors are not consistently present at the lake site; visitors should bring their own provisions. Cell phone signal (4G/5G) is generally weak or absent at the lake.

Best Time to Visit

The best time of day for photography is early morning or late afternoon when the light is softer. The dry season, from November to April, offers the most accessible conditions for travel. The lake's water level is relatively stable year-round.

Facts & Legends

Local folklore attributes the lake's formation to a mythical hippopotamus. It is said that the hippopotamuses residing in the lake are protected by spirits and are considered sacred by the local communities.
