Las Teresitas Beach, Tenerife, Canary Islands, Europe
Las Teresitas Beach is an artificial beach situated in the village of San Andrés, on the northeastern coast of the island of Tenerife in the Canary Islands.
Visual Characteristics
The beach features imported golden sand, contrasting with the typical black volcanic sand found on other parts of Tenerife. Its waters are generally calm and clear, protected by a long offshore breakwater. A dense line of palm trees runs parallel to the shoreline, providing a distinct visual element. The beach spans approximately 1.5 kilometers in length.
Location & Access Logistics
Las Teresitas Beach is located directly adjacent to the village of San Andrés. It is approximately 7 kilometers northeast of the city center of Santa Cruz de Tenerife. Access is primarily via the TF-11 road, which connects Santa Cruz to San Andrés. Extensive free parking is available along the length of the beach. Public transport is provided by TITSA bus lines, specifically line 910, which runs frequently from Santa Cruz de Tenerife directly to the beach and San Andrés.
Historical & Ecological Origin
This is an entirely man-made beach, constructed in the 1970s. Its golden sand was imported from the Sahara Desert, transported by ship from the former Spanish Sahara (now Western Sahara). The original coastline in this area consisted of volcanic rock and black sand. A substantial breakwater was built offshore to protect the new sandy beach from ocean currents and erosion.
Key Highlights & Activities
Primary activities include swimming in the calm, shallow waters and sunbathing. The protected bay is suitable for paddleboarding and kayaking. Designated areas are available for beach volleyball. Lifeguard services are present during operational hours.
Infrastructure & Amenities
The beach is well-equipped with public restrooms, showers, and changing facilities. Numerous kiosks and beach bars (chiringuitos) are distributed along the sand, offering food and beverages. Sun loungers and parasols are available for rent. There is consistent 4G/5G cell phone signal coverage across the entire beach area. Shaded areas are provided by the extensive palm tree plantation.
Best Time to Visit
The beach is accessible and pleasant year-round due to Tenerife's consistent climate. For photography, early morning offers softer light and fewer crowds. Late afternoon provides warm light for sunsets over the Anaga mountains. The calm waters are suitable for swimming at any tide.
Facts & Legends
The most notable fact is the origin of its sand, which was transported from the Sahara Desert, requiring significant logistical effort. A local tip suggests visiting during weekdays to avoid larger weekend crowds, particularly in the summer months.
