Layer House | Kranj

Layer House (Layerjeva hiša) is a multi-purpose cultural center and historic townhouse located in the old town of Kranj. It serves as an artist-in-residence hub, gallery, museum, and social center, named after its most famous former resident, the 18th-century painter Leopold Layer.

The building is a three-story 18th-century townhouse characterized by a blend of Baroque and Neoclassical architectural elements. The interior features historic arches, vaulted ceilings, and winding staircases. The western side of the house opens into a tiered garden and a spacious terrace built alongside the medieval city walls, offering panoramic views of the city and Šmarjetna Gora.

Historical Origin

The house became the residence and workshop of the prominent Slovenian painter Leopold Layer (1752–1828) in the late 18th century. After a severe fire destroyed much of the house and workshop in 1811, it was reconstructed. It remained a private residence for generations before being renovated and reopened in 2011 as a cultural center managed by the Carnica Institute.

Leopold Layer is famous for painting the "Mary Help of Christians" icon at Brezje while in prison for counterfeiting Austrian banknotes to save his family from poverty. A local "secret" is the restored 19th-century frescoes discovered on the first floor during the building's 21st-century renovation.
