The National Liberation Monument (Spomenik revolucije) is a significant sculptural work located in the center of Kranj, situated in the park area between the Gorenjska Museum and the municipal building. It is a primary example of socialist-era memorial art in Slovenia.
Visual Characteristics
The monument is a large-scale bronze sculptural composition set on a massive stone pedestal.
Design: It features a dynamic group of figures representing the struggle and sacrifice of the local population during World War II. The figures are rendered in a social-realist style with expressive, elongated forms.
Materials: Cast bronze for the sculptural elements and local gray limestone for the base.
Scale: The monument stands approximately 5 meters tall, designed to dominate the surrounding plaza (Trg revolucije).
Location & Access Logistics
Address: Slovenski trg, 4000 Kranj.
Access: Located in a public square accessible to pedestrians. The area is flat and paved.
Parking: The "Slovenski trg" underground parking garage is located directly beneath the square.
Transport: It is situated approximately 200 meters from the central bus station.
Historical Origin
The monument was created by the renowned Slovenian sculptor Lojze Dolinar and was unveiled in 1961. It was commissioned to commemorate the partisans and civilians from the Gorenjska region who participated in the National Liberation Struggle (NOB) between 1941 and 1945. Dolinar, who has a permanent gallery in the nearby Town Hall, designed the work to reflect both the tragedy of war and the triumph of the revolutionary spirit.
Key Highlights & Activities
Artistic Detail: Observers can examine the intricate details of the figures, which include soldiers, workers, and families, symbolizing the collective nature of the resistance.
Commemorative Events: The square serves as a site for official state and local ceremonies on national holidays, such as Day of Uprising Against Occupation (April 27) and Sovereignty Day.
Urban Relaxation: The surrounding Slovenski trg is a popular spot for locals to sit and gather, featuring modern benches and proximity to several cafes.
Infrastructure & Amenities

Best Time to Visit
The monument is accessible 24/7. Late afternoon lighting is best for viewing the bronze textures without harsh shadows. In winter, the square is often decorated with lights, providing a different aesthetic context for the sculptural forms.
Facts & Legends
Lojze Dolinar considered this one of his most significant public works. A unique aspect of the monument's history is that the square beneath it was extensively excavated and redesigned in the 2000s to create the underground parking facility, during which the monument was carefully protected and its surroundings modernized to integrate the historic bronze with contemporary urban architecture.
