Pungert Tower, Kranj, Slovenia, Europe
Pungert Tower (Pungert) is the only fully preserved medieval defense tower in Kranj. It is located at the southernmost tip of the city's conglomerate promontory, forming part of a unique architectural ensemble alongside the Church of St. Fabian and Sebastian and a 19th-century school building.
Visual Characteristics
The tower is a massive stone and masonry structure with a square floor plan and thick walls typical of late medieval fortifications. It features a high, pointed wooden roof covered in traditional shingles. The exterior is characterized by small, defensive window slits on the lower levels and larger openings on the upper residential floors. The structure is integrated into the remains of the medieval city wall.

Facts & Legends
The name "Pungert" is derived from the German word Baumgarten (orchard), referring to the fruit gardens that once occupied this tip of the city. A verified historical fact is that the tower served as a city prison for several centuries; some of the lower interior walls still bear inscriptions and marks from former inmates.
