Malcapuya Island, Coron, Philippines, Asia

Malcapuya Island is a premier beach destination located south of Culion and Busuanga Islands. It is the centerpiece of the "Tour C" or "Island Escapade" itinerary in Coron, often compared to Boracay for its powder-fine white sand.

Visual Characteristics

The island features a long, expansive stretch of bone-white sand on its southern shore, lined with coconut palms and basic wooden huts. The water is exceptionally clear, transitioning from a pale turquoise to deep blue. On the opposite side of the beach, jagged rock formations and cliffs provide a contrast to the soft shoreline.

Location & Access Logistics

Address: Malcapuya Island, Coron, Palawan, Philippines.

Access: Reachable only by boat from Coron town proper.

Transport: * Boat: A 1.5 to 2-hour boat ride from Coron town pier. Due to the distance, it is typically part of a full-day tour.

Entry: Requires an entrance fee (approx. 200–250 PHP), usually included in organized tour packages.

Historical & Ecological Origin

The island is privately owned but open to the public for tourism. It remains largely undeveloped to preserve its natural state. The surrounding waters are part of a protected marine area, hosting vibrant coral gardens a short distance from the shore.

Key Highlights & Activities

Beach Relaxation: The fine sand and calm environment make it ideal for sunbathing and lounging.

Snorkeling: A short swim from the shore leads to a reef where giant clams and a variety of tropical fish are common.

Island Walk: Visitors can walk to the end of the beach to reach a rocky viewpoint overlooking the neighboring islands.

Beach Picnics: Most tours serve a seafood buffet lunch in the shaded huts along the beach.

Infrastructure & Amenities

Infrastructure is minimal. There are several open-air wooden huts for shade and a basic restroom facility. There are no luxury resorts or electricity on the island. A small kiosk occasionally sells coconuts and snacks. Cellular signal is very weak or non-existent.

Best Time to Visit

Dry Season (December to May): Crucial for this destination, as the 2-hour boat ride can become rough during the monsoon season.

Midday: Most tours arrive around 11:00 AM and stay for lunch, taking advantage of the brightest sunlight for water clarity.

Rules

No Single-Use Plastics: Strictly enforced.

Waste Management: "Pack it in, pack it out" policy.

Marine Protection: Do not step on corals when swimming out to the snorkeling area.

Nearby Landmarks

Banana Island: 1.0 km North.

Bulog Dos Island: 1.5 km North.

Culion Island: Located to the West.
