Mercado de Nuestra Señora de África, Tenerife, Canary Islands, Europe
The Mercado de Nuestra Señora de África is a municipal market complex located in Santa Cruz de Tenerife, on the island of Tenerife in the Canary Islands. It serves as a central hub for fresh produce, meats, fish, and local goods.
Visual Characteristics
The market features a Neo-Colonial architectural style, characterized by its white facade, red tile roofs, and a prominent clock tower. It is structured around a central courtyard with multiple levels of stalls, incorporating wrought iron details and arched walkways. The building's design includes large arched entrances and decorative elements typical of early 20th-century Spanish architecture.
Location & Access Logistics
The market is situated in the heart of Santa Cruz de Tenerife, approximately 1.5km south of the city center's Plaza de España. Access is primarily via Avenida de San Sebastián or Calle de La Noria. Underground parking is available directly beneath the market, accessible from Avenida de San Sebastián. Several TITSA bus lines, including 901, 902, and 903, have stops within 200 meters of the market entrance.
Historical & Ecological Origin
Construction of the market began in 1942 and it was inaugurated in 1943. Designed by architect José Enrique Marrero Regalado, its original purpose was to replace the old municipal market, La Recova Vieja, and centralize the city's food supply in a more modern and hygienic facility. The name honors the Virgin of Africa, patron saint of Ceuta, a Spanish city in North Africa.
Key Highlights & Activities
Visitors can purchase fresh seafood, local cheeses, cured meats, fruits, and vegetables from various specialized stalls. The flower market on the upper level offers a selection of plants and cut flowers. There are also small eateries and tapas bars within the complex. A flea market, known as 'El Rastro', operates in the surrounding streets on Sundays, extending the market experience.
Infrastructure & Amenities
Restrooms are available on multiple levels within the market building. The covered structure provides ample shade throughout the day. Cell phone signal (4G/5G) is generally strong throughout the building. Numerous food vendors, cafes, and small restaurants are integrated into the market complex, offering prepared meals and beverages.
Best Time to Visit
The market is busiest and offers the widest selection of fresh produce in the mornings, particularly between 09:00 and 13:00. Weekday mornings are generally less crowded than Saturdays. For the freshest fish and seafood, an early morning visit to the basement level is recommended. The flower market is also best visited early for optimal selection.
Facts & Legends
The market's distinctive clock tower is a prominent landmark in Santa Cruz. A local tip for visitors is to explore the basement level, known as 'La Recova', which houses a specialized fish market and additional food stalls, often overlooked by first-time visitors.
