Millennium Park was conceived in 1997 as part of a larger initiative to redevelop the Illinois Central Railroad's former rail yards. Construction began in 1998 and the park officially opened in 2004. The park's design was a collaboration of several architectural and landscape firms, including Skidmore, Owings & Merrill (SOM) for the Pritzker Pavilion and Anish Kapoor for Cloud Gate. The site was previously a complex of railroad tracks and parking lots.

Visitors can view and interact with the Cloud Gate sculpture. The Jay Pritzker Pavilion hosts free concerts and events during warmer months. Crown Fountain offers interactive water features and video projections. The Lurie Garden provides a space for passive recreation and botanical appreciation. Ice skating is available at the McCormick Tribune Ice Rink from mid-November to mid-March.
Infrastructure & Amenities
Restrooms are available within the park. Shaded areas are provided by trees in the Lurie Garden and by the Pritzker Pavilion's canopy. Cell phone signal (4G/5G) is generally strong throughout the park. Food vendors and nearby restaurants are accessible along Michigan Avenue and surrounding streets.
Best Time to Visit
For photography of Cloud Gate, early morning or late afternoon provides optimal lighting conditions with fewer crowds. The best months for visiting are May through October, when outdoor events are frequent and the weather is generally mild. The Lurie Garden is most vibrant from late spring through early autumn.
Facts & Legends
Cloud Gate is often referred to as "The Bean" by locals due to its shape. The sculpture's surface is polished to a mirror finish, reflecting the Chicago skyline and the sky. The park was built on air rights over railroad tracks, a significant feat of urban engineering.
