Parque Zoológico de Centenario was established in 1917 to commemorate the centennial of Mexican Independence. It was designed by architect Manuel G. Gual. The park is situated on land that was historically part of a hacienda.

A local anecdote suggests that the park's lagoon was once a natural cenote, though this has not been geologically confirmed. The park's original design included a small amusement area, remnants of which can still be observed.
