Parque Zoológico de Centenario, Merida City, Mexico, North America

Parque Zoológico de Centenario is a zoological park located in Merida City, Mexico. It serves as a public green space and animal exhibition facility.

Visual Characteristics

The park features a central lagoon with a stone bridge. Enclosures are constructed with a combination of metal fencing and concrete. Mature trees provide significant canopy cover throughout the grounds. The main entrance is marked by a stone archway.

Location & Access Logistics

The park is situated approximately 3 kilometers west of Merida's historic city center. Access is via Calle 59. Public parking is available on-site, with capacity for approximately 100 vehicles. Bus lines 70 and 79 stop directly in front of the park entrance on Calle 59.

Historical & Ecological Origin

Parque Zoológico de Centenario was established in 1917 to commemorate the centennial of Mexican Independence. It was designed by architect Manuel G. Gual. The park is situated on land that was historically part of a hacienda.

Key Highlights & Activities

Visitors can observe a collection of regional and exotic animals, including jaguars, monkeys, and various bird species. Walking paths allow for exploration of the park's layout. The central lagoon area is accessible for viewing.

Infrastructure & Amenities

Restroom facilities are located near the main entrance and in the central area of the park. Shaded seating areas are available under mature trees and some covered structures. Cell phone signal (4G) is generally consistent within the park. No on-site food vendors are present, but several small shops are located outside the park's perimeter.

Best Time to Visit

For optimal animal viewing and cooler temperatures, visit between 9:00 AM and 11:00 AM. The late afternoon, from 4:00 PM to 5:30 PM, also offers good visibility as animals become more active. The dry season, from November to April, generally provides the most pleasant weather conditions.

Facts & Legends

A local anecdote suggests that the park's lagoon was once a natural cenote, though this has not been geologically confirmed. The park's original design included a small amusement area, remnants of which can still be observed.
