The Basin is a geological formation located in Franconia Notch State Park, near Lincoln, New Hampshire, USA.
Visual Characteristics
The Basin is a large, smooth, bowl-shaped pothole carved into granite bedrock by glacial meltwater. Its diameter is approximately 30 feet, and its depth is around 15 feet. The walls of the pothole are polished and rounded. A small waterfall, known as The Basin Cascade, flows into the Basin, and the Pemigewasset River exits from its lower side.
Location & Access Logistics
The Basin is situated directly off Interstate 93 (I-93) in Franconia Notch State Park. Take Exit 34A for Franconia Notch Parkway Southbound or Exit 34 for Franconia Notch Parkway Northbound. The site is clearly marked with signage. There is a dedicated parking area adjacent to the formation. Public transport options are limited; the closest major transit hub is in Plymouth, NH, requiring a private vehicle or taxi for onward travel to the park.
Historical & Ecological Origin
The Basin was formed over thousands of years by the erosive power of glacial meltwater and the abrasive action of rocks and sediment carried by the water. This process of pothole formation is a common feature in areas shaped by glaciation. The surrounding area is part of the White Mountain National Forest, characterized by mixed hardwood and softwood forests.
Key Highlights & Activities
Observation of the pothole and its associated waterfall. Walking the paved path around the immediate area. Photography of the geological features. Access to the Flume Gorge is approximately 1 mile south via the paved park trail.
Infrastructure & Amenities
Restrooms are available at the parking area. There are picnic tables and some shaded areas provided by surrounding trees. Cell phone signal (4G/5G) is generally available but can be intermittent within the notch.
Best Time to Visit
The Basin is accessible year-round, but the waterfall is most active during spring melt and after heavy rainfall. Summer offers pleasant temperatures for exploration. Autumn provides foliage viewing opportunities. The best time of day for photography is generally mid-morning or late afternoon to avoid harsh overhead light.
Facts & Legends
Local legend suggests that the Basin was formed by the giant Franconia, who used it as his personal washbowl. Geologically, it is a prime example of glacial pothole erosion.
