The Petit Martinique Lighthouse is a navigational aid located on the island of Petit Martinique, Grenada.

It functions as a fixed white light, guiding maritime traffic in the surrounding waters.

Visual Characteristics

The lighthouse structure is a cylindrical concrete tower, painted white. It stands approximately 15 meters (49 feet) in height. The lantern room at the apex is enclosed by glass panels and topped with a metal dome.

Location & Access Logistics

The lighthouse is situated on the northeastern tip of Petit Martinique island. Access is via a unpaved track originating from the main village. The track is approximately 1.5 kilometers long and is passable by 4x4 vehicles. Pedestrian access is also possible. There is no designated parking area; vehicles can be parked at the track's commencement point. Public transport on Petit Martinique is limited to water taxis connecting to Carriacou.

Historical & Ecological Origin

The lighthouse was constructed in the mid-20th century to enhance maritime safety in the Grenadine Islands. Its purpose was to mark the eastern approach to Petit Martinique and the southern entrance to the Tobago Cays. The site is composed of sedimentary rock formations typical of the Lesser Antilles.

Key Highlights & Activities

Observation of the lighthouse structure from its base. Photography of the lighthouse and surrounding coastline. Birdwatching is possible in the scrub vegetation.

Infrastructure & Amenities

There are no public restrooms or shade structures at the lighthouse site. Cell phone signal (4G/5G) is generally available. No food vendors are present at the immediate location; provisions should be made from the main village.

Best Time to Visit

For photography, the late afternoon provides direct sunlight on the western face of the tower. The dry season, from January to May, offers the most stable weather conditions. No tide-specific access requirements exist.

Facts & Legends

Local accounts suggest the lighthouse was built using materials transported by boat from Carriacou. A specific tip for visitors is to observe the marine life in the shallow waters near the base during calm conditions.
