Puerto Rico Beach, Gran Canaria, Canary Islands, Europe
Puerto Rico Beach is an artificial crescent-shaped beach situated in the town of Puerto Rico de Gran Canaria, on the southwest coast of Gran Canaria, Canary Islands.
The beach features imported golden sand, creating a wide, gently sloping shoreline. The water is typically calm and clear, protected by two breakwaters. The beach is flanked by a marina on its eastern side and a promenade backed by commercial establishments and terraced hillsides.
Location & Access Logistics
Puerto Rico Beach is located directly within the resort town of Puerto Rico. Access is primarily via the GC-1 motorway, exiting at Puerto Rico. It is approximately 50 kilometers southwest of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria. Paid underground parking is available near the marina and along the main access roads. Public transport is provided by Global bus lines, with several routes (e.g., Line 91, Line 33) serving the Puerto Rico bus station, which is a short walk from the beach.
Historical & Ecological Origin
Puerto Rico Beach is a man-made construction, developed in the 1970s as part of the larger tourism infrastructure project for the resort. Its purpose was to create a sheltered, sandy area suitable for swimming and sunbathing, enhancing the appeal of the area for visitors.
Key Highlights & Activities
Swimming and sunbathing are primary activities due to the calm waters. Water sports such as jet skiing, parasailing, and paddleboarding are available for rent. Boat excursions, including dolphin watching tours and ferry services to nearby beaches like Amadores and Mogán, depart from the adjacent marina.
Infrastructure & Amenities
The beach is well-equipped with public restrooms and showers. Sun loungers and parasols are available for rent. There is ample shade provided by rented parasols, but no natural shade. Cell phone signal (4G/5G) is strong. A wide selection of restaurants, cafes, and shops are located directly on the promenade bordering the beach.
Best Time to Visit
The beach is suitable for visiting year-round due to Gran Canaria's consistent climate. For photography, early morning or late afternoon offers softer light and fewer crowds. The calm waters make it accessible at any tide, though high tide provides a slightly larger swimming area.
Facts & Legends
The golden sand of Puerto Rico Beach was imported from the Sahara Desert, a common practice for creating artificial beaches in the Canary Islands. This importation was a significant logistical undertaking to establish the beach's current appearance and function.
