Red Island, Rovinj, Croatia, Europe
Red Island (Crveni otok) is one of the most prominent locations in the Rovinj archipelago, consisting of two artificially connected islands: Sveti Andrija (St. Andrew) and Maškin. It is situated approximately 15 minutes by boat from the city center.
Visual Characteristics
The islands are characterized by dense Mediterranean macchia, pine forests, and manicured parklands. Sveti Andrija features a 19th-century castle and a central hotel complex, while Maškin is more rugged and naturalistic. The coastline is predominantly rocky with several pebble coves. A stone causeway connects the two islands, allowing for pedestrian transit between the developed northern section and the quieter southern section.
Location & Access Logistics
The island is located roughly 2.0km southwest of Rovinj’s harbor.
Access: Accessible via a regular hourly boat service departing from the "Delfin" pier or the main town waterfront (Mali mol).
Transit Time: Approximately 15–20 minutes.
Navigation: The islands are car-free. Bicycles and walking are the only modes of transport permitted.
Historical & Ecological Origin
Archaeological evidence indicates Roman settlement and a 6th-century Benedictine monastery. In 1891, the Hütterott family purchased the island, transforming the remains of the monastery into a family castle and systematically afforesting the terrain. Ecologically, the island acts as a significant habitat for local bird species and features several rare botanical specimens introduced during the Austro-Hungarian period.
Key Highlights & Activities
Hütterott Castle: A historical residence integrated into the modern hotel complex, housing a small maritime collection.
Maškin Island: Dedicated primarily to naturist (FKK) beaches and secluded hiking trails.
Water Sports: The island serves as a base for diving, windsurfing, and kayaking in the surrounding archipelago.
Mausoleum: The Hütterott family mausoleum is located in a secluded forest clearing on Maškin.
Infrastructure & Amenities
The island is anchored by the Island Hotel Istra complex. Amenities include high-end restaurants, pizzerias, beach bars, and public restrooms. It features an outdoor pool system and a wellness center. 5G cellular coverage is maintained across the island. Paved paths provide accessibility on Sveti Andrija, while Maškin's trails are mostly unpaved.
Best Time to Visit
Activity: Morning hours (09:00–12:00) for hiking and exploring the historical sites before peak heat.
Sunset: The western side of Maškin offers unobstructed views of the sunset over the open Adriatic.
Season: May through October coincides with the ferry schedule and hotel operations.
Facts & Legends
A historical oddity is that the two islands were originally separate and were only connected by an artificial embankment in the late 19th century to create a unified park. Local legend suggests that the Benedictine monks abandoned the island in the 13th century following a series of unexplained events, though historical records cite economic decline and pirate raids as the primary causes.
