Schwarzsee, Grindelwald, Switzerland, Europe
Schwarzsee is a small alpine lake located at approximately 2,360 meters on the northern slopes of the Schwarzhorn, above the Grindelwald valley. It is distinct from the more famous Schwarzsee in Zermatt or the Fribourg region.
Visual Characteristics
The lake is characterized by its dark, deep-water appearance (hence "Black Lake") and its positioning in a rugged, rocky cirque. The terrain is starkly alpine, featuring scree slopes, sparse high-altitude vegetation, and patches of perennial snow. It provides a direct view of the Wetterhorn and the Schreckhorn across the valley.
Location & Access Logistics
Schwarzsee is situated along the high-alpine trail between First and Grosse Scheidegg.
Access: Take the Grindelwald–First gondola to the summit station.
Hiking: From First, follow the trail toward Grosse Scheidegg via the "Schreckfeld" detour or the higher ridge path. The hike takes approximately 1 hour and 15 minutes from First.
Alternative: It can be reached via a steep ascent from Pfingstegg (approx. 2.5 hours) or a descent from the summit of the Schwarzhorn.
Logistics: The lake is remote; there is no mechanical transport or road access directly to the shoreline.
Historical & Ecological Origin
The lake is a natural tarn formed by glacial scouring in the sedimentary rock of the Schwarzhorn range. It is fed primarily by snowmelt. Due to its high elevation and northern orientation, the lake remains frozen for much of the year, often until late June. It serves as a vital water source for local alpine wildlife, including chamois and ibex.
Key Highlights & Activities
Solitude: Unlike the heavily frequented Bachalpsee, Schwarzsee receives significantly fewer visitors, offering a more wilderness-oriented experience.
Peak Bagging: It is a common rest point for hikers attempting the ascent of the Schwarzhorn (2,928m), which involves a protected climbing path (Via Ferrata).
Photography: The dark water provides high-contrast reflections of the limestone cliffs of the Schwarzhorn.
Infrastructure & Amenities
Infrastructure at the lake is nonexistent. There are no shelters, toilets, or dining facilities. The nearest amenities are at the First station or the Schreckfeld mountain restaurant. 5G cellular coverage is intermittent due to the surrounding rock faces. The terrain is rugged; sturdy hiking boots are mandatory.
Best Time to Visit
The site is only accessible during the summer hiking season, typically from July to October. In early summer, the lake may still be partially covered in ice. Late afternoon provides the best light for the peaks of the Bernese Alps located to the south.
Facts & Legends
A verified geological fact: the area around Schwarzsee is composed of "Wildflysch," a complex mixture of rock types that makes the terrain particularly prone to erosion and contributes to the lake's dark, mineral-heavy appearance.
