Sergeant Floyd Monument, Sioux City, USA Iowa, North America

The Sergeant Floyd Monument, located on a bluff overlooking the Missouri River in Sioux City, Iowa, is a towering memorial dedicated to Sergeant Charles Floyd, the only member of the Lewis and Clark Expedition (1804–1806) to die during the Corps of Discovery’s journey. It is a National Historic Landmark and one of the most important monuments along the Lewis and Clark Trail.

Historical Background
Sergeant Charles Floyd, a Kentucky native and one of the 33 expedition members, fell ill and died on August 20, 1804, just a few miles south of present-day Sioux City. His death was likely caused by a ruptured appendix, making him the only fatality of the entire expedition. He was buried on a bluff near the Missouri River, a site that became sacred to local and national history.

In the late 19th century, erosion threatened his original grave. Floyd’s remains were reburied higher up the bluff, and in 1901, the Sergeant Floyd Monument was erected to permanently mark his final resting place. It was the first National Historic Landmark designated in the United States in 1960.

Design and Features
The monument is a striking example of early 20th-century commemorative architecture:

Obelisk Structure: The monument is a 100-foot-tall white stone obelisk, modeled after the Washington Monument in Washington, D.C.

Materials: Constructed of Kettelson stone quarried in Minnesota, designed to withstand the test of time and weather.

Surrounding Park: The monument sits in a landscaped park area with walkways, interpretive signage, and views of the Missouri River valley.

Interpretive Markers: Plaques and displays provide historical context about Sergeant Floyd, the Lewis and Clark Expedition, and the significance of the site.

Cultural and Historical Significance
The Sergeant Floyd Monument represents both local pride and national heritage:

Commemoration of Sacrifice: Honors Floyd as the only member of the Corps of Discovery to lose his life during the expedition.

Connection to Exploration: Marks Sioux City as a pivotal site along the Lewis and Clark Trail, linking the region to one of America’s greatest journeys.

National Symbol: As the first officially designated National Historic Landmark, the monument holds special significance in the history of U.S. preservation.

Community and Educational Role
The monument and its surrounding park serve as a place for both reflection and learning:

Tourist Attraction: Draws visitors interested in history, exploration, and river heritage.

School and Group Visits: Provides educational programs tied to the Lewis and Clark Expedition.

Commemorative Events: Hosts ceremonies on anniversaries related to the Corps of Discovery and Veterans Day observances.

Modern Identity
Today, the Sergeant Floyd Monument remains one of Sioux City’s most iconic landmarks, symbolizing the city’s deep ties to American exploration history. The obelisk rising above the Missouri River continues to honor Floyd’s sacrifice while educating visitors about the endurance, risks, and legacy of the Lewis and Clark Expedition.

It stands as a permanent tribute to exploration, sacrifice, and national heritage, linking Sioux City to one of the defining stories of early America.
