Mohegan Bluffs is a series of clay cliffs located on the southern coast of Block Island, Rhode Island.
Visual Characteristics
The bluffs consist of steep, eroded clay cliffs that rise approximately 200 feet above the Atlantic Ocean. The clay exhibits varied coloration, including shades of red, brown, and grey. The vegetation at the cliff top is primarily low-lying coastal scrub and grasses. The ocean below is typically a deep blue, with whitecaps visible during rougher conditions. The beach at the base of the bluffs is composed of coarse sand and pebbles.
Location & Access Logistics
Mohegan Bluffs is situated at the southern tip of Block Island, approximately 4 miles south of the main settlement of Old Harbor. Access is via Mohegan Trail, a paved road. Parking is available at a designated lot at the end of Mohegan Trail. From the parking area, a series of wooden steps (approximately 100-150 steps) descends to the beach below. There is no direct public transport to the bluffs; visitors typically arrive by car or bicycle from Old Harbor.
Historical & Ecological Origin
The bluffs are a result of glacial activity during the last ice age, specifically the deposition of glacial till. The erosion by wind and wave action over millennia has shaped the current cliff face. The name "Mohegan" refers to the indigenous Mohegan tribe, who are believed to have used the area historically.
Key Highlights & Activities
Observation of the cliff formations and ocean views from the top. Descending the steps to the beach for exploration. Visiting the nearby Southeast Lighthouse. Birdwatching, particularly during migration seasons.
Infrastructure & Amenities
Restrooms are available at the parking area. Limited shade is present at the cliff top. Cell phone signal (4G/5G) is generally available. No food vendors are located directly at the bluffs; visitors should bring supplies or plan to eat in Old Harbor.
Best Time to Visit
For photography, early morning or late afternoon light provides optimal illumination of the cliff faces. The best months for weather are typically June through September, with milder temperatures and less frequent storms. Access to the beach via the steps is dependent on weather conditions; they can be slippery or closed during inclement weather.
Facts & Legends
A local legend suggests that during a battle, Mohegan warriors pushed their enemies off the cliffs to their deaths. The Southeast Lighthouse, located adjacent to the bluffs, was moved inland in 1993 to prevent it from falling into the sea due to coastal erosion.
