Location & Access Logistics
The Fossil Creek Reservoir Natural Area is situated approximately 10 miles (16 km) northwest of downtown Fort Collins. Access is via County Road 27 (also known as County Road 38E or Fossil Creek Road). Turn north onto County Road 27 from Highway 14. The entrance to the parking area is on the west side of County Road 27. Parking is available in a designated lot. Public transportation does not directly serve this location.

The reservoir was constructed in the early 20th century as part of the municipal water supply system for Fort Collins. It is an artificial impoundment created by a dam on Fossil Creek. Ecologically, the area represents a semi-arid grassland environment adapted to the high plains of northern Colorado.

Activities include birdwatching, fishing (license required), hiking on designated trails, and nature observation. The Fossil Creek Trail offers a loop around a portion of the reservoir. Kayaking and paddleboarding are permitted on the reservoir.

Restrooms are available at the main parking area. Shade is limited, primarily found near the parking area and along some trail sections. Cell phone signal is generally unreliable within the natural area. No food vendors are present within the natural area; visitors should bring their own provisions.
Best Time to Visit
For optimal birdwatching, early morning and late afternoon are recommended, particularly during spring and fall migration periods. The best months for comfortable hiking are April through October. Summer months can be hot, with temperatures frequently exceeding 80°F (27°C). Fishing is generally best in the cooler morning and evening hours.
