Umbrella Street (Patihani), Bhaktapur, Nepal, Asia
Umbrella Street is a decorative pedestrian installation located in Patihani, within the Bharatpur Metropolitan City of southern Nepal. It is situated on the northern bank of the Rapti River, serving as a focal point for the Patihani tourism corridor adjacent to Chitwan National Park.
Visual Characteristics
The landmark features a steel-framed canopy supporting approximately 480 multi-colored umbrellas suspended above a paved walkway. The structure is approximately 10 meters wide and flanked by landscaped gardens, park benches, and a large "I Love Patihani" monument. At the southern terminus, the street opens into a riverside promenade offering views of the Rapti River's sandy banks and the forested park beyond.
Location & Access Logistics
The site is located 22 km south of Narayangarh and 10 km west of Sauraha. Access is via the paved Bharatpur-Patihani road; public buses and electric rickshaws operate regularly from Bharatpur's Hakim Chowk. Dedicated parking for private cars and tour buses is located at the entrance to the Patihani tourist area, approximately 100 meters from the street.
Historical & Ecological Origin
Developed by the Patihani Tourism Development Committee and inaugurated in February 2020, the project was part of a provincial initiative to diversify tourism outside the Sauraha hub. The site occupies a former flood-plain buffer zone and was engineered to promote urban-style recreation while maintaining proximity to the Chitwan National Park ecological boundary.
Key Highlights & Activities
Walking under the umbrella canopy is the primary activity, often combined with photography at the various designated "selfie points." At sunset, visitors congregate at the riverbank end of the street for unobstructed views of the water. The area also serves as a staging ground for boat safaris and guided jungle walks departing for the nearby park.
Infrastructure & Amenities
The street is equipped with solar-powered LED lighting for nighttime illumination. Public restrooms and drinking water stations are available at the park entrance office. 4G and 5G cellular coverage is consistent. A row of standardized stalls and nearby riverside cafes provide snacks, traditional Nepali cuisine, and beverages.
Best Time to Visit
Optimal timing for photography is between 16:00 and 18:00 (the "golden hour") when the sun aligns with the river and illuminates the umbrellas from a low angle. October to March offers dry weather and clear skies. The street is illuminated daily until approximately 21:00.
Facts & Legends
A unique logistical oddity is that the umbrellas are replaced twice annually to combat fading from the intense Terai UV radiation and damage from monsoon winds. Since its opening, the street has been credited with increasing local domestic tourism by over 40%, transforming Patihani from a quiet fishing village into a major regional weekend destination.
