Ventspils Lighthouse, Ventspils, Latvia, Europe

The Ventspils Lighthouse is a navigational structure situated at the northern end of the Southern Pier, marking the entrance to the Venta River in Ventspils, Latvia.

Visual Characteristics

The lighthouse is a cylindrical tower, 19 meters in height, constructed from reinforced concrete. Its exterior is painted with alternating horizontal stripes of red and white. A lantern room with a gallery is positioned at the top, housing the light source.

Location & Access Logistics

The lighthouse is located at the terminus of the Southern Pier, approximately 2.5 kilometers northwest of Ventspils city center. Access is primarily via the pier, which is open to pedestrians. Parking is available at the base of the pier, near the intersection of Ostas iela and Jūras iela. Public transport options include local bus lines, with stops within 1 kilometer of the pier entrance.

Historical & Ecological Origin

The current Ventspils Lighthouse was constructed in 1970, replacing earlier navigational beacons that had existed at the harbor entrance since the late 19th century. Its primary purpose is to guide vessels safely into the Port of Ventspils through the Baltic Sea approach.

Key Highlights & Activities

Visitors can walk the length of the Southern Pier to reach the lighthouse, offering views of the Baltic Sea and the Venta River mouth. Fishing is permitted from designated areas along the pier. The lighthouse itself is not open for public ascent.

Infrastructure & Amenities

Restrooms are available near the entrance to the Southern Pier, approximately 2 kilometers from the lighthouse. There is no direct shade at the lighthouse structure. Cell phone signal (4G/5G) is generally strong throughout the pier area. Food vendors and cafes are located closer to the city center, at the beginning of the pier.

Best Time to Visit

The best time to visit for photography is during sunrise or sunset, when the light illuminates the lighthouse and the sea. The months of June through August offer the most favorable weather conditions, with milder temperatures and less precipitation. No specific tide requirements affect access.

Facts & Legends

The Ventspils Lighthouse is one of the few lighthouses in Latvia that is not a historic stone tower, reflecting a more modern, functional design. A local tip for visitors is to observe the large boulders placed along the pier's edge, which serve as breakwaters against strong sea currents.
