West View, San Andres, Colombia, South America
West View is a coastal rock formation and natural pool located on the western side of San Andres Island, Colombia.
This site offers a unique geological feature where the sea has carved out accessible swimming areas within volcanic rock.
Visual Characteristics
The area consists of dark, porous volcanic rock formations that extend into the Caribbean Sea. The water within the natural pools is typically clear and exhibits shades of turquoise and deep blue, depending on depth and sunlight penetration. The rock surfaces are uneven, with some areas smoothed by wave action and others retaining a rough texture. Vegetation is sparse, primarily consisting of salt-tolerant grasses and small shrubs on the landward side.
Location & Access Logistics
West View is situated approximately 6 kilometers southwest of the main town of San Andres. Access is via the Circunvalar Avenue (the island's main ring road). Turn off onto a smaller, paved road marked for West View. Parking is available on-site in an unpaved lot. Public bus line #4 runs along Circunvalar Avenue, with a stop approximately 500 meters from the entrance; a short walk is required from the bus stop.
Historical & Ecological Origin
The rock formations at West View are the result of ancient volcanic activity, with the sea subsequently eroding and shaping the solidified lava flows over millennia. This process created the natural pools and submerged caves that characterize the site. Ecologically, it represents a coastal transition zone between terrestrial and marine environments.
Key Highlights & Activities
Swimming in the natural rock pools is the primary activity. Snorkeling is possible in the clearer sections of the pools and adjacent shallow waters, allowing observation of small reef fish. Visitors can also explore the rock formations at low tide. Observation decks provide vantage points for viewing the sea.
Infrastructure & Amenities
Restrooms are available on-site. Limited shade is provided by natural rock overhangs and a few strategically placed palapas. Cell phone signal (4G) is generally available. Small food and drink vendors are typically present during peak hours.
Best Time to Visit
For photography, early morning (7:00 AM - 9:00 AM) or late afternoon (4:00 PM - 5:30 PM) offers softer lighting. The best months for calm seas and pleasant weather are generally from December to April. High tide is recommended for optimal swimming depth in the pools.
Facts & Legends
A local legend suggests that the rock formations were once the resting place of ancient sea spirits. A verified fact is that the water temperature within the pools can be several degrees warmer than the open sea due to solar heating of the dark rock.
