White Drin River Springs, Pec, Kosovo, Europe
The White Drin River Springs (Burimi i Drinit të Bardhë) is a karst spring and waterfall complex located 12 kilometers north of the city of Peja. It serves as the primary hydrological source of the White Drin river, emerging from a limestone cave system at the base of Rusolia mountain.
Visual Characteristics
The site features a 25-meter-high waterfall cascading over moss-covered limestone cliffs into a series of turquoise pools. The surrounding terrain consists of dense beech and oak forests with high humidity levels and jagged karst rock formations. The water is characterized by high clarity and low temperatures, flowing through stone-lined channels and historical wooden watermills.
Location & Access Logistics
Access is via the M9.1 highway (Peja–Rozaje road) to the village of Radavc. A paved side road leads directly to the site entrance, which is approximately 500 meters from the main highway. A designated parking area is located at the base of the trail; from there, a 10-minute walk on a paved uphill path leads to the main waterfall. Local buses from Peja to Radavc run hourly.
Historical & Ecological Origin
The spring is a natural karst phenomenon formed by underground drainage through the Accursed Mountains massif. While the geological formation dates back millions of years, the site has been utilized since the Ottoman period for hydraulic power, evidenced by the presence of restored 18th-century watermills. It was designated a protected natural monument in 1983.
Key Highlights & Activities
Hiking is the primary activity, with marked trails leading to the Radavc Cave (Sleeping Beauty Cave) located above the waterfall. Observation platforms provide direct views of the main 25-meter drop. Guided cave tours are available seasonally. Photography is common at the wooden bridges spanning the lower river rapids.
Infrastructure & Amenities
Restrooms and waste bins are situated at the entrance near the parking zone. Shade is abundant due to the heavy forest canopy. Cell phone signal (4G/5G) is stable throughout the lower park area but diminishes inside the cave. Several restaurants and trout farms providing food and beverages are located along the access road.
Best Time to Visit
The best time for photography is midday (11:00 – 13:00) when the sun reaches the bottom of the gorge. Peak water volume occurs in April and May during the snowmelt from the surrounding peaks. Summer months (June – August) offer the coolest microclimate for hikers escaping the valley heat.
Facts & Legends
The site is home to the "Sleeping Beauty" cave, so named because of the distinct stalagmite and stalactite formations discovered in 1968 that resemble a reclining figure. Local folklore suggests the spring's water possesses healing properties, leading to a long-standing tradition of residents collecting water for domestic use during specific lunar cycles.
