Accra Zoo, Accra, Ghana, Africa
Accra Zoo is a wildlife conservation and recreational facility situated within the Achimota Forest Reserve in the northern part of Accra, Ghana. It serves as an urban sanctuary for indigenous and exotic animal species and functions as a center for biodiversity education.
Visual Characteristics
The zoo is integrated into the secondary tropical forest of the Achimota Forest Reserve, featuring unpaved, sandy pathways that wind through dense vegetation and dappled sunlight. Animal enclosures consist of renovated wire-mesh cages, masonry pits, and recently upgraded high-security paddocks, including a lion enclosure reinforced with a five-meter-tall outer perimeter fence. The site has a rustic, natural appearance with a lack of paved internal roads, emphasizing the forest environment.
Location & Access Logistics
The facility is located off Independence Avenue, specifically across from the Achimota branch of the Forestry Commission. Access is via the Giffard Road or the N1 (Accra-Tema Motorway), following signs for the Achimota Forest. Visitors must check in at the Forestry Commission office near the main gate before proceeding via a 5-minute drive or 30-minute walk along an uneven dirt track to the zoo entrance. Parking is available in unpaved clearings near the receptive facilities.
Historical & Ecological Origin
The original Accra Zoo was established in 1961 by Dr. Kwame Nkrumah as a private menagerie behind the Flagstaff House. Following his overthrow in 1966, it was opened to the public. In 2006, the zoo was relocated to the Achimota Forest Reserve to facilitate the construction of the Jubilee House presidential complex. Ecologically, the zoo hosts the Endangered Primate Breeding Centre, established in partnership with West African Primate Conservation Action (WAPCA).
Key Highlights & Activities
Guided tours are the primary activity, where staff provide detailed information on animal behaviors and conservation status. Notable species on display include white lions, zebras, hyenas, pythons, and endangered primates such as the Roloway Monkey. Visitors are occasionally permitted to handle non-venomous royal pythons under supervision. The zoo also features an aviary containing African Grey Parrots and various macaw species.
Infrastructure & Amenities
Following a major renovation in 2022, the zoo features upgraded receptive facilities, security checkpoints, and CCTV monitoring systems. Basic public restrooms are available near the entrance. Shade is provided naturally by the forest canopy and several thatched-roof shelters. 4G/5G cell phone signal is generally stable but can be intermittent in deeper forest sections. Small vendors selling beverages and snacks are located near the main forest gate.
Best Time to Visit
The zoo is open daily from 09:00 to 16:30. The optimal time for a visit is between 09:00 and 11:00 to observe animals during their peak activity periods and avoid the midday heat. Weekday visits are recommended to avoid the higher visitor volume typically seen on weekends and public holidays.
Facts & Legends
A significant historical event occurred in August 2022 when an intruder was attacked by lions after scaling the enclosure, leading to a four-month closure and the subsequent installation of the current high-security 16-foot (approx. 5-meter) perimeter fencing. A unique tip for visitors is to bring empty plastic bottles and aluminum cans to the service area for donation to the local recycling program.
