Bojo Beach, Accra, Ghana, Africa
Bojo Beach is a private coastal resort situated on a narrow sandbar between the Densu River delta and the Atlantic Ocean in Bortianor, Greater Accra. It functions as a managed recreational site approximately 20km west of the Accra central business district.
Visual Characteristics
The beach is characterized by fine, light-grey sand and a shoreline bordered by a tidal lagoon on one side and the Atlantic surf on the other. The vegetation consists primarily of manicured coconut palms and salt-tolerant grasses. The resort area includes white-painted wooden structures, thatch-roofed cabanas, and a concrete jetty used for ferry crossings.
Location & Access Logistics
Access the site via the Accra-Winneba Road (N1), turning south at the Old Barrier or Mallam junction toward Bortianor. Visitors must park at the mainland reception area and utilize a motorized wooden ferry or canoe to cross the Densu River to reach the sandbar. Paved parking is available at the mainland terminal. Public "tro-tro" minibuses serving the Bortianor or Kokrobite routes stop within a 10-minute walk of the reception.
Historical & Ecological Origin
The beach is part of the Densu Delta, an ecologically significant area designated as a Ramsar site due to its mangrove ecosystems and migratory bird populations. The resort itself is a modern private development designed to provide a secluded leisure environment by utilizing the natural geographical separation created by the river's path into the Gulf of Guinea.
Key Highlights & Activities
Canoe or motorboat transfers are the primary means of arrival and provide views of the river mangroves. Swimming is possible in both the calm lagoon waters and the more turbulent ocean side. Additional activities include beach volleyball, soccer on the sandbar, and jet-skiing in the designated river sections.
Infrastructure & Amenities
The resort features a restaurant, a cocktail bar, and changing rooms with public restrooms. Shaded seating is provided via permanent thatch-roofed summer huts available for rent. 4G/5G cell phone signal is consistent throughout the area. There is no public electricity on the sandbar; the facility operates using private generators.
Best Time to Visit
The facility is most accessible during the dry season (November to March) when river currents are predictable for boat crossings. For photography, the late afternoon (16:00–18:00) offers optimal lighting across the lagoon and the ocean horizon. Weekdays are recommended for a quiet environment, as the site experiences high visitor volume on weekends.
Facts & Legends
Bojo Beach is one of the few locations in Ghana where visitors can experience a freshwater river and the saltwater ocean simultaneously within a 50-meter walking distance. A specific tip for visitors is to verify the ferry operation times before arrival, as boat transfers typically cease shortly after sunset.
