Shai Hills Resource Reserve, Accra, Ghana, Africa
Shai Hills Resource Reserve is a 51-square-kilometer fenced wildlife sanctuary located in the Shai-Osudoku District of the Greater Accra Region. It serves as a protected area for biodiversity conservation, cultural heritage preservation, and outdoor recreation.
Visual Characteristics
The landscape is dominated by five prominent granite hills (inselbergs) rising sharply from the surrounding Guinea Savannah plains. The terrain consists of open grasslands, dry evergreen forests, and rocky outcrops. Visible wildlife includes olive baboons, green monkeys, kobs, and various bird species. The reserve also features limestone caves and ancient stone settlements.
Location & Access Logistics
The reserve is situated along the Tema-Akosombo Road (N2), approximately 50km northeast of Accra. Access is via the main entrance at Doryumu Junction. Visitors typically arrive via private vehicle or taxi; public "tro-tro" minibuses heading toward Akosombo or Somanya stop at the reserve's front gate. On-site unpaved parking is available at the reception center.
Historical & Ecological Origin
Established in 1962, the area was the ancestral home of the Shai people until they were evicted by British colonial authorities in 1892. The reserve preserves the cultural remains of these settlements, including the Mogudu and Hiewayo caves. Ecologically, it is a rare example of a dry evergreen forest ecosystem within a coastal savannah zone, hosting over 175 bird species and various mammals.
Key Highlights & Activities
Primary activities include guided game drives and walking safaris to observe baboons, antelopes, and zebras. The rocky hills provide opportunities for rock climbing and hiking, particularly to the Mogudu Lookout for panoramic views. Cultural tours visit the ancestral caves used by Shai royalty. The reserve also features a small museum at the reception and a high-rope obstacle course.
Infrastructure & Amenities
The facility includes a visitor reception center, basic public restrooms, and a small campsite. 4G cell phone signal is generally stable near the main gate and elevated areas but can drop in the valleys between hills. Shaded areas are provided by summer huts and the natural forest canopy. There are no full-service restaurants inside; visitors are advised to bring their own water and food.
Best Time to Visit
The reserve is open daily from 08:00 to 17:00. The optimal time for wildlife viewing is early morning (08:00–10:00) when animals are most active. The dry season (November to March) is preferred for hiking and cave exploration to avoid slippery rocks and overgrown vegetation.
Facts & Legends
The Shai people believe the hills are protected by ancestral spirits, and traditional rites are still occasionally performed in the caves. A specific logistical tip is that baboons at the entrance are highly habituated to humans and will attempt to retrieve food from vehicles; visitors must keep windows closed and avoid feeding the animals to prevent aggressive behavior.
