The North Lighthouse is a historic navigational aid situated on Block Island, within the municipality of New Shoreham, Rhode Island, USA.

Visual Characteristics

Constructed from granite blocks, the lighthouse stands at approximately 60 feet in height. Its cylindrical tower is painted white, topped with a black lantern room. The structure exhibits a classic New England lighthouse architectural style.

Location & Access Logistics

The North Lighthouse is located at the northern tip of Block Island. Access is via Corn Neck Road, approximately 7 miles from the New Shoreham ferry terminal. Parking is available at the base of the lighthouse. Public transport on Block Island is limited to seasonal shuttle services and taxis.

Historical & Ecological Origin

The current North Lighthouse was constructed in 1867, replacing an earlier structure built in 1820. It was built by the U.S. Lighthouse Board to guide vessels into Block Island Sound. The site is characterized by coastal scrub and rocky terrain.

Facts & Legends

A local legend suggests that the ghost of a former lighthouse keeper, Silas, can be seen tending the light on foggy nights. The lighthouse was decommissioned in 1955 and is now maintained by the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary.
