Centennial Park, Garden City, USA Kansas, North America
Centennial Park is a municipal park located in Garden City, Kansas, USA.
It functions as a public recreational space within the city limits.
Visual Characteristics
The park features a central, man-made lake with a surface area of approximately 15 acres. The lake's perimeter is lined with concrete walkways and grass verges. Surrounding the lake are mature deciduous trees, primarily cottonwoods and elms, providing significant canopy cover. Open lawn areas are interspersed with paved picnic sites and playground equipment. The park's northern section contains a small, 9-hole disc golf course.
Location & Access Logistics
Centennial Park is situated at 2010 E. Mary St, Garden City, KS. It is located approximately 3.5 kilometers east of the Garden City city center. Access is directly from East Mary Street, which provides a main entrance. A secondary access point is available from North 30th Street. The park offers ample paved parking lots at both the east and west entrances, with capacity for over 100 vehicles. Public transport options are limited; however, Garden City Transit bus route #3 stops at the intersection of East Mary Street and North 28th Street, a 0.4km walk to the park's main entrance.
Historical & Ecological Origin
Centennial Park was established in 1976 to commemorate the United States Bicentennial. The park and its central lake were developed on land previously used for agricultural purposes. The lake was engineered as a stormwater retention basin and recreational feature. The existing tree population was largely preserved during development, with additional plantings of native and ornamental species occurring over subsequent decades.
Key Highlights & Activities
Activities include fishing in the lake (catch and release encouraged), picnicking at designated sites, using the children's playground, and playing disc golf. Walking and jogging are permitted on the paved perimeter path. Seasonal boat rentals (pedal boats) are available from May through September. Birdwatching is a common activity due to the park's tree cover and water feature.
Infrastructure & Amenities
The park contains multiple restroom facilities, strategically placed near parking areas and the playground. Numerous picnic tables and barbecue grills are available. Significant portions of the park are shaded by mature trees. Cell phone signal (4G/5G) is generally strong throughout the park. No on-site food vendors operate within the park, but several fast-food restaurants are located within a 1km radius along East Mary Street.
Best Time to Visit
For photography, early morning (7:00 AM - 9:00 AM) offers favorable lighting conditions with fewer crowds. The best months for outdoor activities are April through October, with average daily temperatures ranging from 15°C to 30°C. No specific tide requirements apply as the lake is a man-made, controlled water body.
Facts & Legends
A local anecdote suggests that the park's lake was once home to a large, unusually colored carp, though no official records confirm its existence. The park's original design included a small amphitheater, which was later removed due to low usage.
