Alun-Alun Kidul is a public square located in the southern part of Yogyakarta, Indonesia.

Visual Characteristics

The square is a large, open, rectangular space paved with dark grey stone. Two large Beringin (Ficus benghalensis) trees stand at its center. The perimeter is defined by low stone walls and is bordered by historical buildings and street vendors.

Location & Access Logistics

Alun-Alun Kidul is situated approximately 1 kilometer south of the Sultan's Palace (Kraton). Access is via Jalan Alun-Alun Kidul. Parking is available in designated areas surrounding the square, though it can become congested during peak hours. Several local bus routes pass near the square, with stops a short walk away.

Historical & Ecological Origin

The square's origins date back to the establishment of the Sultanate of Yogyakarta in the 18th century. It served as a ceremonial and public gathering space. The Beringin trees are considered sacred and are integral to Javanese cosmology.

Key Highlights & Activities

Visitors can walk between the two central Beringin trees, a traditional activity believed to grant wishes if completed without looking aside. The area is known for its evening atmosphere, with numerous food stalls and rental pedal carts (odong-odong) offering rides around the square.

Infrastructure & Amenities

Restrooms are available in nearby buildings and at some food stalls. Shade is limited to the areas beneath the Beringin trees and awnings of surrounding structures. Cell phone signal (4G/5G) is generally good. Food vendors are abundant, particularly in the evening.

Best Time to Visit

The square is most active and visually engaging from late afternoon into the evening, approximately 5:00 PM to 10:00 PM, when food stalls are set up and the pedal carts are operational. Lighting is artificial after sunset.

Facts & Legends

A local legend states that if a person can walk directly between the two central Beringin trees with their eyes closed and without deviating from a straight path, their wish will be granted. Many visitors attempt this challenge.
