Church of Our Lady of Remedy, Kotor, Montenegro, Europe

The Church of Our Lady of Remedy (Gospa od Zdravlja) is a 16th-century Roman Catholic church situated on the slopes of Mount Lovćen. It is a primary landmark on the ascent to the San Giovanni Fortress.

Visual Characteristics

The church is a modest, single-nave stone structure. Its most prominent feature is a Baroque-style bell tower with a pyramid-shaped roof, which serves as a vertical focal point against the mountain backdrop. The interior is simple, featuring a marble altar and the graves of local citizens who died during various plague epidemics.

Location & Access Logistics

The site is located at an altitude of approximately 100 meters above Kotor-old-town_kotor" class="underline">Kotor Old Town. Access is exclusively via the 1,350-step stone staircase leading toward the fortress. It is positioned roughly at the one-third point of the climb. Reaching the church requires approximately 15–20 minutes of strenuous walking from the town level.

Historical & Ecological Origin

The church was built in 1518 by survivors of the plague as a gesture of gratitude for the end of the epidemic. It is constructed on a narrow limestone ledge. The surrounding terrain is characterized by sparse Mediterranean scrub and steep karst rock faces.

Key Highlights & Activities

The church serves as the first major resting point for those climbing to the fortress. The plateau in front of the church offers the first unobstructed panoramic view of the Bay of Kotor and the urban grid of the Old Town. It is a primary location for landscape photography.

Infrastructure & Amenities

There are no facilities, restrooms, or water sources at the church. The stone path is uneven and can be slippery. 4G and 5G cellular coverage remains strong due to the line-of-sight to the town below.

Best Time to Visit

The church is best visited at sunrise to avoid the heat reflected from the limestone cliffs. In the late afternoon, the structure is illuminated by the setting sun, providing optimal lighting for the white stone facade and bell tower.

Facts & Legends

According to local tradition, the church was built on the site where a miraculous healing occurred during the Black Death. Despite its precarious location, the church survived the 1667 and 1979 earthquakes with only minor structural damage, which locals traditionally attribute to divine protection.
