Lawachara National Park is a protected area located in the northeastern region of Bangladesh, near the city of Sylhet.
Visual Characteristics
The park is characterized by dense tropical evergreen and semi-evergreen forests. Dominant tree species include Teak, Garjan, and Chapalish. The undergrowth consists of ferns, bamboo, and various herbaceous plants. The terrain is undulating with some steep slopes and small streams traversing the landscape. Average canopy height ranges from 15 to 30 meters.
Location & Access Logistics
Lawachara National Park is situated approximately 8 kilometers north of the town of Sreemangal, which is accessible from Sylhet city. From Sylhet, take National Highway N2 towards Dhaka, then turn off onto the Sreemangal-Habiganj Road. The park entrance is located approximately 2 kilometers east of Sreemangal town. Parking is available at the park entrance. The nearest major railway station is Sreemangal Railway Station, with regular train services from Dhaka and Sylhet. Local auto-rickshaws and taxis are available from Sreemangal to the park entrance.
Historical & Ecological Origin
Lawachara was declared a national park in 1996. It is part of the Balla Reserve Forest, which was established in 1920. The park is a remnant of the larger tropical rainforests that once covered this region. Ecologically, it is classified as a tropical evergreen forest, supporting a diverse range of flora and fauna, including several endangered species.
Key Highlights & Activities
Hiking is the primary activity, with marked trails of varying lengths. The park offers opportunities for birdwatching and wildlife observation. Specific trails include the Circular Trail (approximately 3km) and the Hill Track Trail (approximately 4km). Visitors can observe the diverse plant life and search for primate species, particularly the endangered Hoolock Gibbon.
Infrastructure & Amenities
Basic facilities are available at the park entrance, including a visitor information center and restrooms. Limited shaded rest areas are present along the main trails. Cell phone signal (2G/3G) is generally available within the park, though it can be intermittent in denser forest areas. No food vendors are located within the park; food options are available in Sreemangal town.
Best Time to Visit
The best time to visit for pleasant weather is during the dry season, from November to March. The monsoon season, from June to October, brings heavy rainfall which can affect trail conditions. Early morning (6:00 AM - 9:00 AM) and late afternoon (3:00 PM - 5:00 PM) offer the best lighting for photography and increased chances of wildlife sightings.
Facts & Legends
Lawachara National Park is one of the last remaining habitats for the endangered Hoolock Gibbon in Bangladesh. A unique aspect of the park is the presence of the Khasia community, an indigenous group who traditionally inhabit the fringes of the forest and have a deep understanding of its resources.
