Club Indigo Beach, Port au Prince, Haiti, North America

Club Indigo Beach is a coastal public access point located on the western edge of Port au Prince, Haiti.

Visual Characteristics

The beach features light brown, coarse sand. The water is typically a muted blue-green. The shoreline is lined with a moderate density of palm trees and scrub vegetation. Structures include a small, single-story concrete building painted white with a blue roof, serving as a bar/restaurant.

Location & Access Logistics

Club Indigo Beach is situated approximately 12 kilometers west of downtown Port au Prince. Access is via Route Nationale 1 (RN1). Turn south onto the unmarked dirt road immediately after the large Petro Caribe fuel depot. The dirt road is approximately 1 kilometer long and can be rough, especially after rain. Parking is available on-site in an unpaved lot. No public transport directly serves the beach; taxis or private vehicles are required.

Historical & Ecological Origin

The area is a natural coastal plain formed by alluvial deposits. The structures at Club Indigo were constructed in the late 1980s as a private beach club, later transitioning to public access.

Key Highlights & Activities

Swimming is possible. Sunbathing on the sand. Consumption of food and beverages at the on-site bar/restaurant. Observation of local fishing activity.

Infrastructure & Amenities

Restrooms are available within the bar/restaurant building. Limited shade is provided by palm trees and the building's overhang. Cell phone signal (2G/3G) is generally available. Food and beverage vendors operate from the on-site building.

Best Time to Visit

For photography, early morning (07:00-09:00) offers softer light. The best months for weather are December through April, avoiding the peak rainy season. High tide is generally preferred for swimming.

Facts & Legends

Local lore suggests that during the 1990s, the beach was a popular, albeit unofficial, meeting point for expatriates and diplomats seeking a less formal environment than the city's hotels.
