The North Country Chamber of Commerce Scenic Dock is a public access point located on the eastern shore of Lake Memphremagog in Newport, Vermont.
Visual Characteristics
The dock is constructed from treated lumber, featuring a weathered grey finish. It extends approximately 100 feet into Lake Memphremagog, with a width of 8 feet. The structure includes several mooring posts and a small, open-air pavilion at its landward end. The surrounding area consists of a mown lawn leading to the water's edge.
Location & Access Logistics
The dock is situated at the end of Dock Street in Newport, VT. It is approximately 0.5 miles east of the Newport city center. Access is via Dock Street, which is paved and leads directly to a small, gravel parking area with capacity for approximately 15 vehicles. Public transport options are limited; the nearest bus stop is on Main Street, approximately 1 mile west of the dock.
Historical & Ecological Origin
The dock was constructed in 2005 by the North Country Chamber of Commerce to provide public access to Lake Memphremagog for recreational purposes. Lake Memphremagog is a glacial lake, formed by the retreat of the Laurentide Ice Sheet approximately 10,000 years ago. The lake's watershed covers parts of both Vermont and Quebec, Canada.
Key Highlights & Activities
Fishing is permitted from the dock. Kayak and canoe launching is possible at the dock's edge. Birdwatching is a common activity due to the lake's ecosystem. The pavilion offers a shaded area for resting.
Infrastructure & Amenities
Restrooms are not present at the dock itself; the nearest public facilities are located in the downtown area. There is no dedicated shade structure beyond the small pavilion. Cell phone signal (4G/5G) is generally available. No food vendors are located directly at the dock; options are available in the nearby downtown district.
Best Time to Visit
For photography, the early morning and late afternoon offer favorable lighting conditions due to the sun's angle over the lake. The best months for visiting are from May through October, when water temperatures are suitable for activities and weather is generally mild. There are no tide-dependent restrictions for access.
Facts & Legends
Local lore suggests that the deepest part of Lake Memphremagog, known as the "Hole," is located offshore from Newport and is rumored to be home to a large, serpentine creature. While unverified, this legend contributes to the lake's mystique.
