Drava River Bridge, Ptuj, Slovenia, Europe
There are two primary bridges across the Drava River in Ptuj that serve distinct roles: the Puch Bridge (car and transit) and the Pedestrian Bridge (historical city access).
1. Puch Bridge (Puhov most)
The Puch Bridge is a modern architectural landmark named after the Slovenian-Austrian inventor Janez Puh (Johann Puch). It serves as the southern bypass of the city.
Visual Characteristics: It is an "extradosed" bridge, a hybrid between a cable-stayed and a girder bridge. It features low pylons (limited to 10 meters to preserve the skyline views of Ptuj Castle) and a sharp, elegant curve across the river.
Logistics & Access: Located on the southern edge of Ptuj, just above Lake Ptuj. It carries two lanes for motor vehicles plus dedicated lanes for cyclists and pedestrians.
Historical Origin: Built between 2005 and 2007 to divert heavy traffic from the old town.
Infrastructure: It is 430 meters long and known for its ambient night lighting, which is a frequent subject of local photography.
2. Ptuj Pedestrian Bridge
This is the primary connection for visitors moving between the right bank (parking/thermal spas) and the historic old town.
Visual Characteristics: A sleek, slender steel and concrete footbridge. It provides the most iconic "postcard" view of Ptuj, with the red roofs and the castle reflecting in the Drava.
Logistics & Access: Connects Zadružni trg (Right Bank) directly to Dravska ulica (Old Town). It is strictly for pedestrians and cyclists.
Parking: The Zadružni trg P+R parking lot is located at the foot of the bridge on the right bank. It is the most convenient parking area for exploring the city center.
Amenities: The bridge is fully illuminated at night. On the old town side, it lands near the Drava Tower and the famous Ribič restaurant.
3. Historical & Roman Context
The bridging of the Drava at Ptuj (Poetovio) has a 2,000-year history:
Roman Bridge: Archaeological evidence and wood analysis confirmed a Roman bridge existed near the current city center, commissioned by Emperor Hadrian (approx. 117–138 AD). Original wooden piles and stone inscriptions from this bridge are preserved in the Ptuj-Ormož Regional Museum.
Ecological Context: The bridges cross the Drava just before it expands into Lake Ptuj, Slovenia's largest artificial lake, which is a significant Natura 2000 bird sanctuary.
Best Time to Visit
For photography, the Pedestrian Bridge at sunset offers the best light for the castle panorama. For a broader view of the region, the Puch Bridge provides a modern perspective of the industrial and natural landscape.
