El Pital Waterfall, La Ceiba, Honduras, North America
El Pital Waterfall is a natural cascade located in the Pico Bonito National Park, near La Ceiba, Honduras.
This site features a single, vertical drop of water over a rock face, surrounded by dense tropical rainforest.
Visual Characteristics
The waterfall descends approximately 30 meters. The rock face is composed of dark, weathered volcanic stone. The water is clear, with a light foam at the base. Surrounding vegetation is characterized by high canopy density, with broadleaf evergreen trees and epiphytes.
Location & Access Logistics
El Pital Waterfall is situated approximately 15 kilometers south of La Ceiba's city center. Access is via the CA-13 highway, turning onto the unpaved road leading into Pico Bonito National Park. The final 3 kilometers to the trailhead require a 4x4 vehicle due to rough terrain. Parking is available at the trailhead, with capacity for approximately 20 vehicles. Public transport does not directly serve the trailhead; a taxi or pre-arranged shuttle from La Ceiba is necessary.
Historical & Ecological Origin
The waterfall is a result of fluvial erosion acting upon volcanic rock formations within the Pico Bonito massif. The area is classified as a tropical rainforest ecosystem, part of the Mesoamerican Biological Corridor.
Key Highlights & Activities
Hiking the trail to the waterfall base is the primary activity. Swimming is permitted in the pool at the waterfall's base. Observation of local bird species is common along the trail.
Infrastructure & Amenities
A basic, unpaved trail leads to the waterfall. There are no permanent restroom facilities at the trailhead or the waterfall site. Shade is provided by the forest canopy. Cell phone signal is unreliable within the park boundaries.
Best Time to Visit
The best time of day for photography is between 10:00 AM and 2:00 PM, when direct sunlight penetrates the canopy. The dry season, from December to April, offers more stable trail conditions. The wet season (May to November) increases water flow but can make the trail muddy.
Facts & Legends
Local folklore suggests the pool at the waterfall's base has restorative properties. The trail to the waterfall is an old logging path, repurposed for park access.
