Fontana dell Amenano, Catania, Italy, Europe
The Fontana dell'Amenano is a 19th-century white marble fountain located at the southern corner of Piazza del Duomo. It serves as a monumental transition point between the civic center and the historic fish market (La Pescheria).
Visual Characteristics
The fountain features a central statue of a young man representing the river god Amenano. He holds a cornucopia, and water spills from it into a large translucent basin, creating a "shroud" or "veil" effect (a lenzuolo) before falling into the river channel below. The structure is carved from white Carrara marble and is inscribed with the city’s coat of arms.
Location & Access Logistics
The fountain is situated in Piazza del Duomo, adjacent to the Palazzo dei Chierici. It is a pedestrian-only site. Access is a 1.2km walk from Catania Centrale station and 500 meters from the Stesicoro metro station. The fountain is directly accessible from the street level with no entry fee.
Historical & Ecological Origin
Sculpted in 1867 by the Neapolitan artist Tito Angelini, the fountain is geologically unique because it is built directly over the Amenano River. Historically, this river flowed on the surface until the 1669 eruption of Mount Etna buried it under a thick layer of lava. Today, the river flows entirely underground; the fountain is one of the few places in Catania where the flowing water of the ancient river is visible to the public.
Key Highlights & Activities
The "Lenzuolo" Effect: Observation of the thin, waterfall-like sheet of water falling into the lower basin.
Entry to the Market: The stairs directly behind the fountain lead down into the vibrant and loud La Pescheria fish market.
Photography: The site provides a popular vantage point for capturing the contrast between the white marble fountain and the dark basalt paving of the square.
Infrastructure & Amenities
Located in the main city square, the fountain is surrounded by cafes, restaurants, and ATMs. 4G/5G cellular signals are excellent. The area is flat and fully accessible. Public drinking water is available at small fountains (fontanelle) nearby, though the water in the Amenano basin itself is not for consumption.
Best Time to Visit
Morning (08:00–11:00) is the optimal time to visit, as the adjacent fish market is at its peak activity, providing a highly sensory experience. The fountain is illuminated at night, highlighting the marble's texture against the dark backdrop of the surrounding Baroque buildings.
Facts & Legends
Local tradition holds that throwing a coin into the fountain's lower basin ensures a return to Catania, similar to the Trevi Fountain in Rome. A verified hydrological fact is that the water seen in the fountain flows at a constant temperature year-round, reflecting its deep subterranean source beneath the city's volcanic foundations.
