Greeting to the Sun, Zadar, Croatia, Europe
The Greeting to the Sun is a contemporary solar-powered installation located on the western tip of the Zadar peninsula, adjacent to the Sea Organ. It consists of a multi-layered glass circular floor that acts as a symbolic communication with light, mirroring the acoustic communication of the nearby organ.
Visual Characteristics
The installation is a 22-meter diameter circle embedded into the stone pavement of the waterfront. it is comprised of 300 multi-layered glass plates arranged in the shape of the sun, with smaller glass circles representing the planets of the solar system in their proportional distances. During the day, it appears as a smooth, metallic-blue glass disc; at night, integrated LED elements produce a programmed light show that shifts in color and intensity.
Location & Access Logistics
The site is situated at the westernmost point of the Zadar Riva (Obala kralja Petra Krešimira IV). It is a 10-minute walk (0.8km) from the central Narodni trg. The area is a pedestrian-only zone; the nearest vehicle access and paid parking are located along the Liburnska obala. Local buses terminate at the central station near the city bridge, approximately 1.2km to the southeast.
Historical & Ecological Origin
Designed by architect Nikola Bašić and completed in 2008, the installation functions as a symbolic public space. The glass plates contain photo-voltage solar modules that absorb solar energy throughout the day. This energy is used to power the light display and also contributes to the city's public lighting system. The project was conceived to revitalize the Zadar waterfront, which was heavily damaged during World War II.
Key Highlights & Activities
Walking across the glass surface is the primary activity, particularly after sunset when the light display begins. The installation serves as a major gathering point for viewing the sunset over the Zadar Channel. Visitors can identify the different planets represented by smaller glass discs located at varying distances from the main sun circle.
Infrastructure & Amenities
The site is an open, flat public plaza with no entrance fees. There are no restrooms or shaded structures directly at the installation, though stone benches and trees are available in the adjacent park area. 5G cell signal is strong. Numerous cafes and restaurants are located within the Old Town, approximately 300 meters away.
Best Time to Visit
The installation is most visually impactful at twilight and immediately after sunset when the LED light show commences. To observe the colors without excessive crowds, late evening (after 22:00) is recommended. For photography of the solar modules and the glass texture, mid-day provides the clearest overhead lighting.
Facts & Legends
The chrome ring surrounding the "Sun" is inscribed with the names of Zadar's saints and the astronomical data of the sun's declination for each day of the year. A local tip is to observe the light patterns closely, as they are designed to follow the rhythm of the waves and the sounds generated by the neighboring Sea Organ, creating a synchronized audio-visual experience.
