Rab Old Town, Zadar, Croatia, Europe
Rab Old Town is a medieval stone settlement situated on a narrow peninsula on the southwestern coast of Rab Island, Croatia. It is characterized by four prominent Romanesque bell towers that define its skyline against the Adriatic Sea.
Visual Characteristics
The town is constructed from local white limestone and features three primary longitudinal streets connected by narrow stone alleys. Architectural styles range from Romanesque and Gothic to Renaissance, with defensive walls enclosing the seaward perimeter. The terrain rises in elevations, creating a tiered layout with red-tiled roofs and stone façades overlooking the turquoise waters of the Kvarner Gulf.
Location & Access Logistics
Access to the island is via the Stinica–Mišnjak ferry line (Rapska Plovidba) or the Valbiska–Lopar line from Krk. From the Mišnjak ferry port, the D105 road leads 11km northwest to the town center. Public bus services connect the main harbor to the town, and a passenger catamaran links Rab directly to Rijeka and Pag. Parking is available in designated lots (Zone 1-3) located at the entrance of the pedestrian zone near the harbor.
Historical & Ecological Origin
The town was declared a Roman municipium in 10 BC by Emperor Augustus. Its current architectural layout was largely established between the 11th and 15th centuries under Venetian influence. The site serves as a historical administrative and religious center, built upon a limestone ridge formed during the Eocene period.
Key Highlights & Activities
Walking the Gornja Ulica (Upper Street) provides access to the four bell towers. Climbing the tower of the Cathedral of the Assumption offers a 360-degree view of the archipelago. The Rabska Fjera, a medieval festival, occurs annually in July. Swimming is possible at the Banova Vila beach located at the base of the town walls.
Infrastructure & Amenities
Public restrooms are located near the Trg Municipium Arba. The town center provides 4G and 5G cellular coverage. Numerous restaurants, pharmacies, and ATMs are concentrated along the Srednja Ulica and the waterfront. Shade is provided by the dense stone buildings and the Komrčar Park adjacent to the old walls.
Best Time to Visit
Optimal photography conditions occur at sunset, specifically from the Komrčar Park viewpoints looking toward the bell towers. May, June, and September offer mild temperatures and reduced pedestrian traffic. High tide is required for boat excursions departing from the town harbor to the nearby Kalifront forest.
Facts & Legends
Local tradition identifies Rab as the birthplace of Saint Marinus, a stonemason who fled the island during Diocletian’s persecutions to found the Republic of San Marino. The town's coat of arms still features the saint's likeness.
