Visual Characteristics
The island is characterized by its relatively flat topography, covered in native grasses and scattered trees, primarily Eucalypts. The riverbanks are a mix of natural vegetation and constructed revetments. The island's perimeter is approximately 1.5 kilometers.
Location & Access Logistics
Heirisson Island is situated 2 kilometers east of Perth's central business district. Access is via a pedestrian bridge originating from the south bank of the Swan River, accessible from the Causeway. Limited street parking is available on the south bank near the bridge entrance. No public transport directly serves the island itself, but bus routes along the Causeway provide access to the bridge. The nearest train station is Elizabeth Quay, approximately 2.5km west.
Historical & Ecological Origin
The island was originally a natural sandbar that was significantly enlarged and stabilized through dredging and reclamation works in the early 20th century. It was developed as a park and wildlife area in the late 1970s. Ecologically, it functions as a riparian habitat within the Swan River estuary.
Key Highlights & Activities
Visitors can walk or cycle the perimeter path. The island is home to a mob of Western Grey Kangaroos, which are often visible during dawn and dusk. Birdwatching is a common activity due to the presence of various waterbirds and terrestrial species. Photography of the kangaroos and city skyline is possible.
Infrastructure & Amenities
There are no permanent restroom facilities or food vendors on Heirisson Island. Shade is provided by mature trees. Cell phone signal (4G/5G) is generally available.
Best Time to Visit
For viewing kangaroos, early morning (6:00 AM - 8:00 AM) and late afternoon (4:00 PM - 6:00 PM) are optimal. Midday can be hot with limited shade. The best months for comfortable outdoor activity are generally September through May, avoiding the peak heat of summer (December-February).
Facts & Legends
The kangaroos on Heirisson Island were introduced in 1970 as part of a conservation effort. They are descendants of kangaroos from Rottnest Island and mainland populations. A specific tip for visitors is to approach the kangaroos slowly and maintain a respectful distance, as they are wild animals.
