Location & Access Logistics

Matagarup Bridge is located 3 kilometers east of Perth's central business district. Access is via the Perth Stadium station, served by Transperth trains on the Midland line. Limited parking is available at the Perth Stadium precinct, with additional options in the East Perth area. Pedestrian access is direct from the Burswood Peninsula walking trails and the stadium concourse.

Historical & Ecological Origin

Construction of Matagarup Bridge commenced in 2017 and was completed in 2019. It was designed by Cox Architecture and built by the West Australian Department of Transport. The bridge's purpose is to enhance connectivity and provide a direct link for event attendees and local recreation.

Key Highlights & Activities

The bridge offers a walk across the Swan River, providing views of the Perth skyline and the Burswood Peninsula. The "Matagarup Zip" allows visitors to zip-line from the bridge's highest point to the Burswood Park foreshore. Climbing the bridge structure is also an available activity, offering panoramic city views.

Infrastructure & Amenities

Restrooms are available at the Perth Stadium precinct and on the Burswood Peninsula. Shade is provided by the bridge's overhead structure in certain sections. Cell phone signal (4G/5G) is generally strong throughout the area. Food vendors are typically present at the Perth Stadium during events and at nearby Burswood Park.

Best Time to Visit

For photography, the late afternoon offers favorable lighting conditions as the sun sets behind the city skyline. The months of March to May and September to November provide mild weather suitable for walking and outdoor activities. Tidal variations in the Swan River do not significantly impact access to the bridge.

Facts & Legends

The name "Matagarup" is derived from the Whadjuk Noongar language, meaning "a place where the river can be crossed by water." The bridge's design was inspired by the shape of a kangaroo's tail, a significant animal in Noongar culture.
