Scarborough Beach, Perth, Australia, Australia

Scarborough Beach is a coastal public space located in the suburb of Scarborough, approximately 14 kilometers northwest of Perth's central business district, Western Australia.

Visual Characteristics

The beach features a wide expanse of pale, fine-grained sand. The Indian Ocean waters typically present a clear blue to turquoise hue, with moderate to large wave sets depending on prevailing conditions. Coastal vegetation, primarily hardy grasses and low shrubs, borders the western edge of the developed foreshore area.

Location & Access Logistics

Access is via West Coast Highway. The beach is situated 14 kilometers from Perth CBD. Ample paid parking is available in designated lots along The Esplanade and adjacent streets. Public transport options include Transperth bus routes 245 and 246, which stop directly at the Scarborough Beach Bus Station, located adjacent to the foreshore.

Historical & Ecological Origin

Scarborough Beach is a natural coastal feature formed by the deposition of sand along the coastline of the Indian Ocean. Its current developed state is a result of urban planning and infrastructure projects, with significant foreshore redevelopment completed in 2018.

Key Highlights & Activities

Activities include swimming, surfing, and bodyboarding. The Scarborough Beach Pool is an Olympic-sized, heated saltwater pool open to the public. Designated barbecue areas and playgrounds are available. Lifeguard services operate during daylight hours from September to April.

Infrastructure & Amenities

Public restrooms and showers are located along The Esplanade. Shade structures are present in park areas. Cell phone signal (4G/5G) is generally strong throughout the foreshore. Numerous cafes, restaurants, and food vendors operate along The Esplanade and surrounding streets.

Best Time to Visit

For photography, early morning or late afternoon provides optimal lighting conditions. The months of December to February offer the warmest weather, with average daytime temperatures around 30°C. Surfing conditions are often best in the morning before onshore winds develop.

Facts & Legends

A notable historical feature is the Scarborough Clock Tower, a prominent landmark on the foreshore, erected in 1930. Local folklore sometimes refers to the "King of Scarborough," a mythical large shark said to inhabit the waters, though this is unsubstantiated.
