Hollenfels Castle, Luxembourg City, Luxembourg, Europe
Hollenfels Castle is a medieval fortress located in the village of Hollenfels, part of the "Valley of the Seven Castles" (Eisch Valley). It is situated approximately 25 kilometers northwest of Luxembourg City.
Visual Characteristics
The castle is dominated by a massive, 39-meter-high rectangular keep (donjon) dating from the 14th century. It features high Gothic vaulted ceilings and a distinctive slate roof. A 17th-century mansion house and several outer defensive walls surround the keep. The structure is built into the edge of a sandstone cliff, with a deep moat separating it from the village.
Location & Access Logistics
The site is located at 2 Rue du Château, L-7435 Hollenfels.
Vehicle: Accessible via the CR105 through the Eisch Valley. Public parking is available near the entrance.
Public Transport: Bus lines connect from Mersch or Luxembourg City, though frequency is limited on weekends.
Pedestrian: It is a key stop on the 27-kilometer "Valley of the Seven Castles" national hiking trail.
Historical & Structural Origin
The first fortifications were built in the 11th century. The current keep was constructed around 1380. Unlike many other Luxembourgish castles, Hollenfels was not destroyed during the world wars or the French Revolution. Since 1948, the Luxembourgish state has owned the property. It now functions primarily as a youth hostel and an ecological education center.
Key Highlights & Activities
The Keep: One of the best-preserved examples of medieval military architecture in the region.
Youth Hostel: The site provides unique accommodation within the historic wings and modern annexes.
SNJ Center: The National Youth Service (SNJ) operates an ecological center here, offering workshops on sustainability and medieval history.
Hiking: The surrounding forests offer trails leading to the Eisch River and the nearby Marienthal Abbey.
Infrastructure & Amenities
The castle grounds are generally open to the public, though the interior of the keep is usually reserved for organized groups and educational workshops. There is a snack bar associated with the youth hostel. 5G/4G coverage is stable. Due to its medieval construction, the keep and many external paths are not accessible to individuals with limited mobility.
Best Time to Visit
Spring and autumn provide the best conditions for hiking the Eisch Valley. The castle is particularly photogenic in the morning when the sun illuminates the eastern face of the keep.
Facts & Legends
Local lore suggests the existence of secret tunnels connecting Hollenfels to the nearby Ansembourg Castle. The name "Hollenfels" literally translates to "Hollow Rock," referring to the numerous natural caves and recesses in the sandstone cliff beneath the foundations.
