Visual Characteristics

The viewpoint is marked by a large wooden cross, approximately 20 meters in height. The surrounding area is a cleared hilltop with gravel pathways. Vegetation consists of low-lying shrubs and grasses typical of the Patagonian steppe.

Location & Access Logistics

The Mirador Cerro de la Cruz is situated 1.5 kilometers north of Punta Arenas' city center. Access is via Bories Avenue, turning onto Waldo Orellana Street. The final ascent is a paved pedestrian path. Limited street parking is available at the base of the path. Public transport options include local bus lines that stop near the intersection of Bories Avenue and Waldo Orellana Street; a walk of approximately 500 meters is then required.

Historical & Ecological Origin

The cross was erected in 1973 by the Salesian community to commemorate the 500th anniversary of the discovery of the Strait of Magellan. The hill itself is a natural elevation formed by glacial deposits during past ice ages.

Key Highlights & Activities

Observation of the city skyline and the Strait of Magellan. Photography of the landscape. Walking the paved path to the summit.

Infrastructure & Amenities

Restrooms are available at the base of the viewpoint. Limited shade is provided by a few scattered trees. Cell phone signal (4G/5G) is generally strong. No food vendors are present at the immediate site; options are available in the city center.

Best Time to Visit

For optimal lighting conditions for photography, late afternoon (approximately 17:00 to 19:00) provides favorable angles. The months of December through February offer the most stable weather, with less wind and precipitation. No tide-specific considerations apply.

Facts & Legends

A local anecdote suggests that making a wish while touching the base of the cross will increase its likelihood of coming true. The cross is illuminated at night, providing a visible landmark from various points in the city.
