River Antoine Rum Distillery, Gouyave, Grenada, North America
The River Antoine Rum Distillery is an operational sugar and rum factory located on the northeastern coast of Grenada. It is one of the oldest functioning water-powered distilleries in the Caribbean.
Visual Characteristics
The distillery complex comprises several stone buildings with corrugated metal roofs. The main building housing the mill and still is constructed from rough-hewn stone. A large water wheel, approximately 5 meters in diameter, is a prominent feature, powered by water channeled from the River Antoine. The surrounding area is characterized by dense tropical vegetation, including sugarcane fields.
Location & Access Logistics
The distillery is situated approximately 10 kilometers northeast of Grenville, accessible via the Grenada North Coast Road (B3). From St. George's, the capital, it is a drive of approximately 45 minutes to 1 hour. Parking is available on-site, though space can be limited during peak visitor times. Public transport to the immediate vicinity is infrequent; visitors typically arrange private transport or join organized tours.
Historical & Ecological Origin
Established in 1785 by Sir Alexander Grant, the distillery was built to process sugarcane grown on the estate. It has remained in continuous operation since its inception, utilizing traditional methods. The water wheel is powered by the River Antoine, a natural watercourse flowing through the estate.
Key Highlights & Activities
Visitors can observe the traditional rum-making process, including the operation of the water-powered mill and the copper pot stills. Guided tours explain the history and production methods. Tastings of the estate's rum are offered. The grounds also feature historical artifacts related to sugar cultivation and rum production.
Infrastructure & Amenities
Restrooms are available for visitors. Limited shaded areas are present within the tour route. Cell phone signal (4G) is generally available. There are no on-site food vendors, but nearby villages may offer local eateries.
Best Time to Visit
The distillery operates year-round, but the sugarcane crushing season typically runs from January to June. Visiting during this period allows for observation of the full production cycle. Mid-morning (9:00 AM - 11:00 AM) offers good lighting for photography and typically fewer crowds.
Facts & Legends
River Antoine is one of the few distilleries in the world that still uses a water wheel to power its machinery. The rum produced is unaged and bottled directly from the still, resulting in a high-proof spirit known locally as "Rude Boy" rum.
