Turn right onto Riverbanks Road, then left onto Wildlife Parkway. Ample paved parking is available on-site for a fee. Public transport options include the COMET bus service, with Route 12 serving the zoo entrance.

The zoo was founded in 1974. The site was formerly the location of the Columbia Naval Ammunition Depot. The botanical garden component was developed to complement the zoological collection, showcasing regional flora and horticultural displays. The zoo is situated along the Saluda River, a tributary of the Congaree River, within the Piedmont region of South Carolina.
